WELCOME to Kilmartin House Museum.
There are more than 800 ancient monuments within a six-mile radius of the village of Kilmartin, Argyll, many of them are are prehistoric. This extraordinary concentration and diversity of monuments distinguishes the Kilmartin Glen as an area of outstanding archaeological importance. It is one of Scotland’s richest prehistoric landscapes. Kilmartin House Museum is an award winning world-class centre for archaeology and landscape interpretation established to protect, investigate and interpret this internationally important archaeological landscape and the artefacts that have been found here. At this unique and vibrant centre you can also see ‘The Valley of Ghosts’ audio-visual – a time travelling experience with breath taking imagery and haunting music. World Poetry Day March 21st 2012

World Poetry Day is a time to appreciate and support poets and poetry around the world.

It is held on March 21st each year and is an initiative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO)

Here at the museum we would like to celebrate the day by announcing the winner of our 2012 Poetry Competitions on that day.

The schools competition is open to pupils of Primary 4 to 7 and Senior 1 to 3 while the public competition is open to children and adults aged 7 years old and upwards.

We would like everyone to tell us about their favourite outdoor place or places in Argyll; it could be a particular beach, a hilltop, mountain, forest, Rock Art, Ancient Monuments or it could be an historic building such as Dunollie or Carnassarie Castle, there are so many to choose from in Argyll.

In the schools competition, there will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winner for primary aged pupils and the same for the senior school pupils.

The first prize winners will also receive a free class visit to the museum, including a museum tour and a guided tour of the Kilmartin Glen Monuments.

In the public competition, there will be a 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize winner for children and the same for adults.

The first prize winner will also receive free family admission to the museum.

All poems submitted will be compiled into a portfolio and available for public viewing at the museum.

Competition closes March 13th 2012 and winners will be announced Wednesday March 21st 2012
