Kilmartin House Museum engages in primary research to broaden our understanding of the area’s unique prehistory and history.
We are also committed to supporting other people’s research by providing local knowledge and offering our resources.
Disseminating the results of all research projects on local archaeology to a non-specialist audience is also an important part of our work.

Forest Surveys
Over the last few years, in partnership with the Forestry Commission (West Argyll) we have conducted desk based surveys and targeted site visits in the Forests of North Knapdale, Ormaig, Brenechollie, Eredine, Kilmichael, Ardcastle, and Minard. These areas border Kilmartin Glen to the north, south and west. Many features identified by foresters were classified during this work, including five previously unrecorded Duns, some new rock art sites and possible Prehistoric cairns.

Dál Riata Dun Community Archaeology Project
In 2005 Kilmartin House Museum launched a community archaeology project. This focused on surveying and excavating a series of monuments at a site near Barnlusgan Loch, in North Knapdale Forest including a Dun, enclosure and cairn. The project aims to discover more about the Iron Age and Early Historic Period of the area as well as involve members of the local community in the archaeological process. Look at the Dál Riata Dun Community Archaeology Project Page to find out more and about how you can get involved……
