Description
A shallow overhanging shelter visible on the right-hand side of the road a few hundred yards before arriving at the Crinan Ferry slipway. The tidal mudflats of the Crinan estuary can be seen in the distance. The shelter has been damaged by a rockfall since this photo was taken in 1997.

Pottery, human bone and midden debris show that people used the three shallow caves at Crinan Ferry over 4,000 years ago for burial and occupation. The caves were used until quite recently and, like similar sites elsewhere, they may have been used as shelters during the Mesolithic.
