Description
The remains of the medieval Parish church of Kilneuair are situated on the edge of a knoll with a late 18th c. burial enclosure nearby. The name Kilneuair comes from "Cill an Iubhair" meaning church of the yew tree and is first recorded in 1394.
Church
There are three main periods of construction. The chancel and E half of the N wall are 13th c. and built of well-coursed rubble masonry which incorporates rounded boulders, the rest of the S wall was rebuilt in the 16th c. with thin slabs of local schist and includes sandstone dressings and some moulded epidiorite dressings. The W half of the N wall is late Medieval. There is a medieval font of epidiorite which was removed and re-erected in 1916.
Burial Enclosure
There is Burial-enclosure, probably late 18th c., situated 4m W of the church which is roofless and has walls of lime-mortared rubble. The S side wall has been treated as an ornamental facade with a pointed blind arch flanked by two narrow pointed windows. The blocks round these, and the angle- quoins of the facade, are carved in a "Celtic equivalent of vermiculated rustication"
Funerary Monuments
Three mediaval tapered grave slabs are situated in the churchyard. They are variously decorated with armed figures, dragon heads, a latin cross and plant designs. There is also a 16th c. tomb-chest inside the church with moulded decoration.
