Kilmartin Museum

One day event workshop
10:00 to 15:00

Join Kilmartin Museum for a workshop exploring Argyll in the first few millennia after the ice age, and learn how ancient hunter-gatherers crafted weapons from deer antler.

Drawing on current and ongoing archaeological research and over a decade of ancient skills practice, Education Team Lead Will Attard will guide participants through the process of crafting a spearhead or harpoon point from antler. You will use stone and flint tools, following the techniques of your Mesolithic predecessors, and learning how these populations survived in a rich but often dangerous world.

The workshop will run from 10:00 til 15:00, and will be held in Kilmartin Museum’s dedicated Learning Centre.

The session will start with a presentation and replica handling session, after which you will have the opportunity to create your own antler spearhead or harpoon.

All safety gear and craft materials will be provided.

There are only 8 places available on this one-day workshop

Minimum age for participants is 18 years.
