Rock Art: Archaeology and Community
Now open at Kilmartin Museum
Step into one of Scotland’s most remarkable prehistoric landscapes with this new special exhibition exploring the rock art of Kilmartin Glen. Rock Art: Archaeology and Community brings together recent discoveries from archaeological excavations at Carnasserie Farm, revealing how these ancient carvings were made—and what they may have meant to the people who created them over 4,000 years ago.
At the heart of the exhibition is a story of collaboration. Excavations in 2023 brought together archaeologists, volunteers, and students, all working side by side. Their shared effort uncovered ancient artefacts, offering fresh insight into the practices and beliefs surrounding prehistoric rock art.
Co-curated by Dr Aaron Watson and Dr Sharon Webb, this exhibition invites you to look beyond the carvings themselves. Discover how archaeology happens in practice, and consider how these markings shaped people’s experiences of place in the past—and how they continue to resonate today.
